Some studios charge a refundable deposit for rented equipment - for example, lenses, studio lights, or backdrops. It's a safeguard against damage. Here's how the deposit works in practice.
How it works step by step
Imagine you're booking a photo studio and adding an 85mm lens rental for 50 PLN. The studio requires a 200 PLN deposit for this equipment.
- At booking - the deposit is charged together with the room price and extras. You see it as a separate line item in the summary.
- During the visit - you use the equipment as normal.
- After the visit - the studio checks the equipment condition.
- Refund - if everything is in order, the deposit returns to your account automatically.
When the deposit is refunded
The deposit is refunded automatically within 3-5 business days after your visit ends - provided the studio hasn't reported any equipment damage.
When the deposit is not refunded
The studio may keep the deposit (in full or partially) in cases of:
- Damage to rented equipment
- Equipment not returned after your visit
- Damage to room elements (e.g., backdrop, tabletop)
In such cases, the studio files a damage report. You receive an email notification describing the issue and have the opportunity to respond - presenting your side of events.
Deposit and booking cancellation
If you cancel the booking, the deposit refund depends on the studio's cancellation rules:
- With a flexible policy - the deposit is refunded
- With moderate and strict policies - the deposit is not refunded
You'll see the deposit refund rules in the booking summary before payment.
How to protect yourself
Before starting your visit, it's worth:
- Checking the condition of rented equipment before you start using it
- Reporting any existing damage or wear to the owner
- Handling equipment carefully
What if you disagree with a claim?
If the studio proposes a deposit deduction you disagree with:
- You'll receive an email with the deduction proposal and evidence.
- In your panel, you can review the details and reject the proposal with a justification.
- The studio may submit the case for mediation by the Booquela team.
- Booquela mediates between the parties - it does not make unilateral decisions.
- Your deposit will not be charged without your explicit consent.
If you notice that equipment has signs of previous damage, report it to the studio right at the beginning of your visit - you'll avoid misunderstandings when the deposit is settled.
